SALT LAKE CITY — One state lawmaker would like to see speed limits raised to 80 miles per hour on more Utah highways.
Rep. Jim Dunnigan is crafting legislation for the upcoming session that would allow Utah's transportation department to decide what highway sections to increase speed limits.
The Taylorsville Republican says if it passes, the speed limits could be raised as soon as this summer.
Utah already has several stretches of highway, mostly in rural areas, where officials raised the speed limit to 80 miles per hour.
Dunnigan told the Deseret News (http://bit.ly/1kCQBex) that those areas have not seen an increase in crashes or fatalities in those areas.
Dunnigan said Interstate 70 in eastern Utah and a few portions of I-215 and I-15 in Wasatch Front are good candidates for higher speed limits.
