WASHINGTON — Jason’s Law, the bill introduced with the hope of creating more trucking parking in the U.S., has finally made it out of committee.

Jason’s Law is included in the two-year highway reauthorization bill passed unanimously Wednesday by the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee.

Jason’s Law would authorize states to use certain appropriated dollars for truck parking facilities, including the construction of rest areas with expanded truck parking; construction of commercial truck parking facilities adjacent to commercial truck stops and travel plazas; the opening of existing inspection and weigh station facilities to truck parking; and promoting the availability of publicly or privately provided truck parking on the National Highway System using intelligent transportation systems.

The bill requires the Department of Transportation to conduct a study of available truck parking and to develop a system of metrics to measure the adequacy of parking facilities.

The bill is named in memory of trucker Jason Rivenburg, a Schoharie County, N.Y., truck driver who was murdered in 2009 at an abandoned South Carolina gas station where he had stopped to rest because he could not find adequate parking elsewhere.
