In the desert in southeastern California, Interstate 10 remained closed in both directions near mile marker 192 after torrential rains on Sunday washed out an eastbound bridge and undermined the westbound lanes.

Traffic is being diverted to Interstate 8 to the south and Interstate 40 to the north, adding more than a hundred miles to the trip. Caltrans spokesperson Terri Kasinga says they don’t have an estimate yet of when the interstate might reopen.

Just saw that on the weather channel. The Eastbound side collapsed with what looks like an SUV on it. Apparently the swollen river washed out the supports under the land side of the easternmost span. Injuries to female driver and 2 kids but not too severe. No fatalities.

Westbound will need inspection and reinforcement before being opened again they say.

@Kiwi303 this is why we can have billions & billions of kilometers of highways in this country. The pavement is only a few centimeters thick. o_O

This is how they're made:

The blacktop ain't too bad, about the same as here, but where's the base metal? last time I was driving though roadworks there was around 8" of AP25 (all pass 25mm screened, anything that passes through a 25mm screen after going through the quarry crusher) being rolled down before the tar got laid.

We have earth-friendly, biodegradable roadways.

See? All that bitching about the millions of miles of blacktop in our country and now, you find out our roads are far more low-impact than anything laid in Euro or UK -centric nations. That means we're decades ahead of the rest of the world. We're ready for hovercars and a time when blacktop and concrete can be left to history forever.

:p

(In case you missed it, this is pure sarcasm. "Biodegradable" roadways.. kind of defeats the purpose of laying roadways, doesn't it? To spell it out, I'm saying most of our roads suck.)
