WASHINGTON — Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx took to the Internet Monday morning in his continued push to convince Congress not to tamper with the current Hours of Service rule.

In its effort to come up with a spending bill that would keep the federal government operating past Dec. 11, the Senate Appropriations Committee Monday or Tuesday was expected to have to deal with a proposed amendment by Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, to suspend the 34-hour restart provision of the current rule for one year until a thorough field study was conducted on the efficacy of provision that allows professional truck drivers to use the restart only once a week and requires two consecutive 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. time periods.

The House is also working on an appropriations bill, but there is no indication it would include language suspending the restart provision. In fact, during debate on an appropriations bill earlier this year, several representatives vowed to keep the new provision intact.

Has anyone ever asked what they thought the 34hr restart was to accomplish? After they give their "it gets the good rest" answer, remind them that most who do the restart are stuck in a truck at a truck stop. Also remind them that the cab and sleeper of a truck is less than half the size of most peoples living rooms.

This is not surprising, since Foxx is nothing more than a lawyer playing a political game. Lawyers are like actors. When they are doing what they trained to do, they are worthwhile. When they try to interject themselves into the real world, everything gets screwed up. Foxx has not more clue about DOT issues, and especially transportation issues, than any other average citizen in the U.S. He is just a lawyer, and one that can't hold a private job as well. Just like Obama.

All the 34 hour reset does is throw off a drivers sleep pattern.
Also a trucks bunk is smaller than a jail cell. Jail cell size is set out by the United nations or something or other, Anything smaller than the set jail cell size is said to be inhumane and yet it is okay for truckers.

From OOIDA's grassroots email notification.

One more call to your lawmakers - both your Congressman and Senators - would be a good move. The number for the U.S. Capitol switchboard is 202-224-3121. The message is short and sweet. Simply ask the staff person to covey your message to "pass the CRomnibus legislation" and thank them for doing so.

To be honest, I'm often more comfortable in my truck than at home. My bunk is set up exactly right, I don't have to deal with anybody else's bullcrap and it's quiet.
