WASHINGTON — Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx took to the Internet Monday morning in his continued push to convince Congress not to tamper with the current Hours of Service rule.
In its effort to come up with a spending bill that would keep the federal government operating past Dec. 11, the Senate Appropriations Committee Monday or Tuesday was expected to have to deal with a proposed amendment by Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, to suspend the 34-hour restart provision of the current rule for one year until a thorough field study was conducted on the efficacy of provision that allows professional truck drivers to use the restart only once a week and requires two consecutive 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. time periods.
The House is also working on an appropriations bill, but there is no indication it would include language suspending the restart provision. In fact, during debate on an appropriations bill earlier this year, several representatives vowed to keep the new provision intact.
