An FMCSA enforcement officer has pleaded guilty to accepting bribes in exchange for Level 1 CVSA decals.
Eric Hernandez, a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Motor Carrier Safety Specialist pleaded guilty in late July to bribery of public officials and witnesses.
The decals, issued by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, signal to other law enforcement officers that a commercial motor vehicle has passed a roadside inspection.
The crime was originally reported to the Texas Department of Public Safety, which started the investigation. The DPS obtained video footage of at least one decal sale. FMCSA and the DOT Office of Inspector General are also investigating.
Additional details of the investigation have not been disclosed. The indictment has been sealed, according to court records.
The maximum penalty for a felony bribery count is 15 years in prison and/or a $250,000 fine.
Hernandez has been on administrative leave since December.
