DeFazio ‘skeptical’ of DOT’s authority to open border, fund program

Despite the fact the Obama administration is launching a pilot program that would allow access to long-haul trucks from Mexico, one U.S. lawmaker is concerned that it’s actually the start of a full-fledged opening of the border.

Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-OR, sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood that requests “written justification of how DOT’s planned program complies with the requirements for pilot programs.”

The program would allow Mexican trucks to operate on U.S. highways beyond the commercial border zone and it would allow Mexican carriers to obtain permanent operating authority after 18 months in the pilot program. That permanent authority would not be rescinded were Congress or the administration to terminate the Mexican truck pilot program.
