have no range unless behind another trucker. Do I need to buy certain antennas?

I'm not sure what you mean by your first sentence. Another truck wouldn't have anything to do with the range of your radio.

What kind of setup do you have now (radio, factory or aftermarket coax and antennae mount(s), and antennae(s)?

Before spending any money, you should check your swr and see if you can improve the performance of what you have.

Ditto what @freedhardwoods said... If the standing wave (SWR) ain't right the best radideeo in the world won't talk across the median. On the other hand, if the SWR is correct, even a stock 4 watt CB will do a fair job.

Best to have the SWR checked by a CB guru. A simple antenna adjustment may get it spot on, OR, there may be problems ranging anywhere from the antenna tip to the coax connection on the back of the unit. Someone who knows what to look for can tell you, pretty quick, what the problem is.

RF issues and Rf bounce can interfere with antenna systems but this shouldnt be a problem with being behind a truckm as stated main thing is to see if your swr s is right with a external meter if its high or directional your recieve waves can be oval or oblong and recieve north to south only if not right
