LITTLE ROCK — The Arkansas Highway Commission says a flooded Interstate 40 bridge that resulted in the closure of the highway last month will need to be replaced.
The commission signed an order Wednesday saying the bridge is in "need of improvement." The order directs the state Highway and Transportation Department to proceed with the replacement project as funding becomes available.
Department spokesman Randy Ort tells the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that while the flooding of the 43-year-old bridge didn't lead to the decision to replace it, it will be factored into the new bridge's design.
