It is one thing to talk about accidents and another to deal with the pain of watching one. It isn't worth our lives to save a few minutes waiting for a train. I once worked for Sothern Pacific on the tracks. The crossing gong is set to start ringing and the crossing arms to go down when the train is only 30 seconds from the crossing island or intersection. That isn't very much time. A lot of vehicles get hit going around the arms or when the train crosses and the driver races around the arms without waiting for the arms to rise because the train has passed. Little do they know that a second train is coming from the opposite direction and is about to enter the island. I once had to pick up body parts in a garbage bag to be returned to the family. I too will never race to beat the guard arms or go around them. By the way. if you do get caught on a track and a train is coming, do not try to run away from the train, do run towards it and away from the track. That way the wreck will be behind you and going in the opposite direction you are running. A loaded train can take up to a mile to come to a full stop.
