Midwest Transport Inc. (MTI), a trucking and logistics company based in Illinois, has halted operations. The closure impacts more than 650 employees, including over 480 drivers. The company has not yet issued a formal public statement.
Drivers and employees received calls from regional managers late Thursday. They were informed that the company was shutting down. An email obtained by FreightWaves confirmed that MTI’s postal service trips would continue through Sunday, September 8. Freight drivers were advised to follow their load planners for further instructions. Terminal and office staff were told to expect updates.
Founded in 1980, MTI operated terminals in Greenup, Illinois; Harmony, Pennsylvania; Memphis, Tennessee; and Tampa and Jacksonville, Florida. The company employed 480 drivers and had a fleet of 428 trucks, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).
Over the past two years, MTI’s trucks underwent 244 inspections. Of those, 65 were placed out of service, resulting in a 27% out-of-service rate, higher than the industry average of 22%. However, the driver out-of-service rate was just 3%, below the national average of 7%.
FMCSA records show MTI faced compliance reviews in July and received violations for driver fitness and controlled substance/alcohol issues. Despite these challenges, MTI’s trucking authorities and broker status remained active. As of Friday, the company had not filed formal closure notices in Illinois, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, or Florida.
Some former employees noted signs of trouble in recent months. Drivers had been reminded to improve logbook compliance, watch their speed, and improve on-time performance.
MTI’s shutdown marks the end of a company that served the U.S. Postal Service for over four decades.
