Greenlane Secures $15 Million Grant from South Coast AQMD to Boost Commercial EV Charging Infrastructure

Colton, CA – Greenlane, a leading innovator in zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) infrastructure, has been awarded a $15 million grant by the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) under the Carl Moyer Zero-Emission Infrastructure Program. This grant will expedite the development of Greenlane’s flagship EV charging site in Colton, California, marking a significant step toward building a nationwide network of commercial EV charging stations.

A groundbreaking event was held to celebrate the start of construction at the Colton site, which is strategically located at the intersection of Interstates 215 and 10. Representatives from Greenlane, the City of Colton, and SCAQMD gathered to highlight the importance of the project, which is anticipated to include more than 60 chargers for heavy-, medium-, and light-duty vehicles when completed by the end of 2024.

“Greenlane is clearly defining a path towards a more sustainable future not only for the transportation industry but also for residents living in San Bernardino County, who are subject to higher levels of air pollution,” said Larry McCallon, South Coast AQMD Governing Board Member and Mayor Pro Tem from the City of Highland. “Freight transportation from the goods movement corridor has been a major source of air pollution in our region, and this project will help improve air quality and bring us one step closer to meeting federal standards.”

The Colton project, funded in part by SCAQMD, will feature 41 charging pedestals and 53 connectors, making it one of the largest EV charging hubs in the region. This site is expected to serve as a model for the future of freight electrification, providing critical infrastructure for zero-emission freight transportation.

A Major Leap Toward Electrified Freight Transport

Greenlane’s first commercial EV charging corridor will support the increasing demand for clean energy infrastructure along one of the country’s busiest transportation routes. The project will help reduce emissions from medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles, a key factor in the region’s air quality challenges. The company’s broader goal is to establish a nationwide network of charging sites across the U.S. and Canada, eventually incorporating hydrogen refueling stations.

“We are excited that Greenlane identified Colton as the company’s first charging site in a project that not only marks a significant step in improving air quality in our community and the region, but that brings vital infrastructure to an important industry,” said Colton Mayor Frank J. Navarro. “This project speaks to Colton’s role in furthering clean energy production and exemplifies the positive outcomes of strong city and stakeholder collaboration.”

Paving the Way for Future Development

Greenlane’s partnership with Daimler Truck North America, NextEra Energy Resources, and BlackRock has made the Colton site a reality, showcasing the company’s forward-thinking approach. The project underscores Greenlane’s commitment to providing sustainable infrastructure solutions for the transportation industry.

Greenlane CEO Patrick Macdonald-King expressed gratitude for the support from SCAQMD: “By establishing corridors and deploying a nationwide network of public charging stations, we’re not only meeting the pressing demand for accessible infrastructure for commercial vehicles but also pioneering a transformative model for the future of commercial EV charging and, eventually, hydrogen refueling.”

The Colton site is set to be commissioned by the end of 2024, marking a pivotal moment in the electrification of freight transportation. As the nation pushes forward with clean energy initiatives, Greenlane continues to lead the charge toward a more sustainable future for the trucking industry.
