I've been driving for roughly 2 years and all was good,6 months ago I was in a fender bender(100.00 dmg to a car) and cited for careless driving.this all happened in maiami,fl.I was terminated of course but I've been unemployeed now for 6 months and can't get hired with any mainstream companies.I had a recruiter suggest finding some of the seedier companies as they would probably hire me.....does any one know who these"seedier" companies are and where I can find them? I need a second chance to prove this was a fluke!!thanks for your time and help!

Swift, JB Hunt, Werner, US Express, really, any major trucking company is "seedy"..............and "sleezy".............and they ain't "mainstream" either.........they hire felons, so you should have achance.

unfortunitly what Pro says here is right. those companies use drivers for there own benefit and have some real uncouth practices. beware of them.

tried most of em,all no go's,swift sent me thru orientation and THEN denied my app,go figure.thanks for the feed back though

here's a site that lists alot of trucking companies out there. it's a good place to start. it's hard to believe nobody will give you a chance with a little fender bender. i am guessing they are looking at the amount of drive time compared to an accident. might try to look into smaller companies in your area. they are a little more lienient. good luck and here's the site :

i am finding this hard right now to believe. i mean, you were driving for "roughly 2 years" as you state. then 6 months ago you had a minor bended fender accident......

that still leave you with 18 months of experience......

you were "cited" for a violation......

i have to wonder why...so i'll "surmise" things, not 'assume"..

did you report the accident right away..??

or, did you wait a day or two...??

did you properly fill out all the paper work about the accident?

had you any other accidents or incidents prior to this one?

how was your work record....?? always on time deliveries or pick-ups?

or were you constantly late?

there is more to this than you are saying. for even some drivers total out cars and don't get fired....

This is really not surprising as I have been through a similar situation.

As much as I dislike J.B. Hunt, a few years ago I was going to go to work for them doing a dedicated run.

Luckily, I already had a job because they chose not to hire me because of a preventable accident.

In my accident, I wasn't cited for anything, and had it been anywhere besides California, it wouldn't have gone down as a preventable. But, in California, the cops are ALWAYS going to go with the story of whoever driving the 4 wheeler.

yes I reported accident right away,my company knew about it right after I called the police,I did fill out an accident report, took pictures..the whole nine yards,no other accidents or tickets, never been late on a pick up or delivery.I wsa fired immediatley because thats company policy, any accidents within 1st year of employment and your gone automatically.I know getting a careless is not good but I didnt think it would cost me this much.when a recruiter calls now the first thing I say is I have a careless driving ticket, they first thing they say is sorry,we need 6 months verifiable safe driving before we can touch you...ok,how do I do that when I can't get hired? And the ticket was civil careless, meaning I didnt have to appear in court, should I be writting down the word civil when Im doing app's?I can't see how it would make that big a difference.

first, what i would do is obtain a copy of your DMV record from your state. check it out carefully for how its worded. if it says civil then i think you might want to mention that you didn't require a court date. of course, i do not like that company policy of firing for an accident, but they set the rules and they do stink. i think what you will probably be better of right now trying to get a class B driving job. that stinks too, but at least you can make a weekly paycheck. then try to stay acident free for at least 6 months to one year.

i think i might be missing something, the employer that fired you, were you there over 1 year, as you said you had "roughly 2 years" driving...????

if not, and you missed that time frame........

right now, really, as much as it will hurt, try for a class B job, maybe even a class C job (package delivery service). if i can find something else, i will post it here.

I can not comment about every company involved in trucking, but the majority of them get "persuaded" by their insurance carrier about what company policy will be.

In the case of the company I work for currently, the insurance company has shown the owners every price break item they can get... ie;

a. Drivers must have 2 yrs verifiable OTR experience
b. No accidents within the last 18 months (preventable or non...doesnt matter)
c. No felony criminal charges (note it says charges...not convictions)

Those are just a couple of things that the insurance companies are "asking" some trucking companies to enact as hiring practice. By doing so, the trucking company reduces their premiums...so you know they go along with it.

As others stated earlier, the bigger companies sometimes known as training companies are often self-funded for insurance and therefore they can "adjust" the rules a bit for people who really catch their interest.

As Pro1 said;

Step #1- Get a copy of your MVR and see what is listed.
Step #2- Call around to the recruiters and ask what you can do to "spruce up" your record perhaps take a refresher training course on driving (Swift used to allow drvrs to do that).
Step #3- Look locally, sometimes a small local company might have the ability to accept a drvr that is rebuilding their record.

Best Wishes and Good luck!

hey folks, thanks for all your help so far.Pro,I did like you suggested and have found 2 pscksge companies and 1 class b company that are checking into my recored now, hopefully I'll hear something good.I will call for my mvr tomorrow and check it out.I was also givena # to Walpole,I guess they haul trash instate but it's class A and the guy said a careless shouldn't matter since they usually only go by how many points you have on your license.this ticket is 2 or 4 so I might be able to get in there too_Oh yeah, the time line,I had been there for less than 6 months when I got the ticket, thats why the policy was in effect.so I have come to the realisation that I wont be over the road again for a while but your right, any job is a paycheck at least.thanks again for all the help and suggestions so far.
Be safe!!

if so, your bascially "north of me" in New England...........

no,its walpole inc down here in florida,i wish i was back in maine right about now though,I could have plowed to make some money then..walpole is out of okachobee fl and they haul trash out of different areas to a facility that burns the stuff.the recruiter said they were not hiring but he wants me to call him back friday and he hopes to have something for me then.I just got a fair credit consumer print out in the mail,it doesnt list my last job, does that mean they dont use dac?just curious.

10-4 the Walpole....

in regards to your current copy of DAC/USIS, it is quite common for some companies to be late in sending in information.

mind you, i got information regarding me, from a company I NEVER WORKED FOR, back in 2005, added to my DAC/USIS dated 12/2007.......!! nearly 2 years AFTER i alledgedly worked there...!!!

and YES, they can also NOT be a DAC/USIS member.........

employers have to be VERY CAREFUL these days in what they say why they fired someone, lest they get SUED BIG TIME.

my best advice now is this, apply for jobs, ANY job, and in the area where they ask you "reason for leaving"....put down, "i wanted better home time", or "i had to leave because my significant other became ill and needed me"....

DO NOT SAY, YOU WERE FIRED

then, in many applications it will ask you, "have you ever been fired or discharged, or asked to leave a job"?

you say NO.......

try these thing first.

they will ask if they "may we/can contact your former employers"?,

you say SURE..........(or yes).............

try these to....

by the end of next week, i'm expecting you to have at least 4 jobs lined up....

many employers by the way only give the dates when you worked for them.

when asked why an employee no longer works there, most employers just pretty much answer, "he doesn't work here anymore", oe words to that effect.

10-4,i had always thought that most employeers asked if a person would be considered for rehire so I have always listed terminated when putting down nlt.if they dont use DAC though ,some employers may never find out. However, that doesn''t mean they wont at least make a phone call and then find out why I dont work there.I will try it out though and see how it shakes out.Thabks again for the helpful advice.!!

as i said, employers MUST be careful as to what they say regarding an employee and why they left..............

a phone call, sure, it will be made, but, believe it or not, i HAVE BEEN TOLD, that if you say "NO" on the application asking if they can call a former employer, THEY WILL CALL..............

saying "YES" on the application, very often, they WILL NOT CALL......

ok,Deboer says Im a little to far south to hire,I have an interview with C&W transport,it's local hauling solid waste but it's cdl A work.I am also waiting to here back from FFE,the woman I spoke to said they usually dont hire out of florida now a days but I told them that I didn't need home time I needed a job.she spoke to me a little more and I explained the situation to her.She said she would have a recruiter call today if he could get to it but mondays were hell,if I didnt here from him today I was to call tomorrow as easrly as possible so that we could speak.Walpole told me to keep checking in for openings and they'd be more than happy to get me in there. That's the latest so far,I'll be back after the interview and my call to FFE.Thanks again for all the help.
