Motor Carrier Apparently my rates are too high

Oh I’ve read some of your past posts.
Obviously you don't pay attention to what you read. Let me help you out here: I don't need to save 3 cpm ever. OTOH, I have a problem leaving money on the table just so I can sit at a truck stop for no particular reason except to satisfy your need for me to go faster.

Looking more and more like it’s gonna be mostly short loads, and mostly exempt loads so I won’t have to worry about HOS.

I’ll keep trying on the longer loads, but I’m content to let those loads go on other trucks until this super low freight goes away.

Can’t wait til this flips.
so bullwinkle is back?

That's just as stupid. Shippers are driving the rates down.
What gets me if Freights Down and Rates below "operation" cost..

Why is every Rest Area and Truckstop packed in everynight...

Seem to me that if was that bad there would be less trucks out on the road..

Heck @mndriver went home awhile said he'd rather use time to catch up on maintenance n repairs than to run for below operational cost..

Then @Mike said he can't afford to park but he also has his bare minimum margin obviously ..

I can afford to park, but I feel it makes more sense to at least be making something right now rather than depleting the money I have any faster than necessary.

Couple reasons..../

1. I wasn’t going to just assume rates would snap back and everything would be better in a few weeks. Everyone is in uncharted waters unless they were alive 100 years ago for the last time we dealt with a virus like this.

2. Even if rates did come back, and it seems like they are right now at least, I want to make all o can right now, into the Summer, and as deep into the Fall as possible because we may very well get a 2nd wave of this virus and the economy could be even further disrupted by a potentially controversial election.

Too much uncertainty for me to just sit around and hope it gets better.

I already sit long enough getting the engine rebuilt.

To continue with my response about the rates being up.

I’m seeing much better rates this week, when I typically see things crawl heading into this weekend every year.

Every load ( dry van) has been just shy of $2/mile, including the two loads that are going to keep me working through the weekend until delivery on Tuesday morning.

Not sure what everyone else is seeing, but it’s at least looking hopeful right now.

Everybody has their reasons..

Infact even though I'm a "Company" Employee noticed my Sits inbetween loads are a day or two whereas up until a month ago they had another dispatch over the Quallcom 500/1000 miles before I even got there and "empty"

I'm also getting more "B.S." loads too like Grocery Wharehouse..

That Food 4 Less in Latrhop was a 749 mile load but took 2 days to do it because of rigid Appointment and 9 PM delivery that screwed me up all week..

Dispatch knows I'm an "Early Bird" that said I'm Accustomed to shutting down "Early" too..

My "Take-Home" pay is also down about 1/2 hundred bucks per week..

Used to be $7/8 aweek TAKE HOME been $5/6 last 3 weeks or so @Mike so I'm "suffering" some too..

Thankfully I don't have the "obligations" most folks have so I can "weather" it but my $avings is Le$$ than the Pace I need to Collect Social Security at 62 n a half

Nonetheless This Covid19 crap screwed everybody

Nickels holding up Dollars

I leave out Tuesday.

Crazy too since the state just gave me 5 weeks of unemployment back checks today too. Each one of those weeks has a $600 kicker too.

I could ride this out until October at home if I really wanted to now.

Due to options available to me, it's more prudent I do what I'm doing. Maybe some day I'll let the cat out of the bag.

I was visiting with a forum member the other day, who is pretty smart about business. We got to talking about how it’s important to have profitable loads, it’s also just as important to keep cash flow up. Cash flow will sink you faster than being unprofitable for a few weeks.

That's exactly why I'm not over buying a truck. I need that buffer for those oh crap repair/slow work moments.

Yes.
Obviously, you can’t operate at break even or a loss long term, but that’s why you profit as much as possible when the hay is in the field.

For me, following this mindset keeps me from freaking out during the lean periods.

I just prefer to anticipate the lean period, not get blindsided like we did this time.

I try to take the lean times and do needed maintenance items to ensure when the hay is good I can run.

Sometimes being profitable means you spend money and fix shit while it's parked.
