COVID-19 positive trucking couple finds little help

Two days after taking a test for COVID-19, OOIDA member Christopher Drew received confirmation he had the virus on April 15.

His wife and co-driver, Chante, was tested the same day he got his results. She’s still waiting for confirmation that the dry, painful cough, general aches, pains, malaise and fever she’s experienced for almost a week are caused by the same virus her husband is certain they picked up out on the road.

Unfortunately, assistance from the government in making sure drivers have masks, sanitizer and access to testing have fallen behind.

While searching for a load in Buffalo, the couple also attempted to find a test site for Christopher, because they were both pretty sure he was sick with either a sinus/upper respiratory infection or COVID-19, and they wanted to know for sure before making any decisions about freight.

Unfortunately, they were unable to find anywhere that could accommodate them within a 400-mile radius of Buffalo, so they took the load from Canton to Wichita Falls, Texas.

“We did the best we could to isolate,” Chante said, “but there’s only so much space in the truck. We couldn’t find hand sanitizer or masks until we got to Dallas, Texas, and by then I was sure if he had it, I did too.”

The Drews are determined to get the word out that people need to be observing social distancing, mask wearing and any other precautionary measure they can take to keep drivers safe because of COVID-19.

Sucks what they went through, but I'm gonna say something.

If you think you have the virus, you need to be heading home. Loaded or not, that truck should have went from Nogales to Kansas City and parked. Feeling like you might be getting sick and continuing to load and proceed to NYC? There was absolutely no logic in that.

I agree with the point that there should be more access to hand cleaner and masks for us, since we are constantly forced to interact in public. That said, when you are sick, running around picking up and dropping loads until you can finally get routed to home is senseless when it's your truck. Go Home, Go Directly Home. Do not pass go, do not collect $200.

it is 6 of one, half a dozen of another.

if you stay home in fear of getting sick, the bills pile up, and you can quite possibly lose everything, as the cash reserves run out.

if you go on the road, you risk getting sick, and lose everything as well, if you never recover and die.

but yea, if you are feeling ill, bu all means head home ASAP where there will be more help than on the road.

Ain't none of us getting off this rock alive. Its just a matter of how long until your ticket is punched for the dirt nap..

So does just regular cleaning and wiping down your stuff. Including before you get back in your truck..

Learn what the public high contact items are and don't use them if possible or don't directly touch them.

Not in this case. The husband was already getting sick. They were trying to get home, but since nothing went from Arizona to Kansas City, they went to freaking ground zero of the Coronavirus. As bad as it is there, they went there suspecting they had it and potentially infected even more people.

They should have deadheaded home and addressed the issue as soon as they got there.

From the article:

"They were told by their company that their truck will likely be totaled because of hazmat concerns."

Why?

so the insurance company "totals" the truck.

then gets ONE can of Lysol, sprays the inside, and sells the truck as salvaged fixed for umpteen thousands of dollars.
They wouldn't even need to do that much.

Just park it for 2 weeks.

Parking it in the sunlight might roast the virus in just a few hours but it will definitely be dead in a week. Two for sure.

By the time they're over the virus and tested negative and have the antibodies, it wouldn't matter anyway.
