The army that burned Washington fought under Major General Robert Ross who commanded a 4,500-man army, composed of the 4th (King's Own) Light, 21st Royal North British Fusiliers, 44th (East Essex) Regiment of Foot, and 85th Regiment of Foot. These were all British formations redeployed from Europe after the defeat of Napoleon. The majority of the British forces went to Canada, but Ross' force went straight from Europe to Bermuda, to be used in raids on the US Atlantic coast.Because Canada was not a country at the time. Canada is only 151 years old. But the solders did come from what is now Canada.
