Transition from Trucking To Technology

Hey folks,

I've been driving for over 20 years and, honestly, I'm tired. I've been missing my kids grow up and all the fun stuff at the house, but I've always made good money. Anyway, I'm looking at transitioning into the technology career, and I wanted to see if anyone had any ideas. I am thinking about joining this tech training program that you can do while you are still driving,I also considered going back to college for an I.T. degree. I just want to work from home and watch my kids grow up. I wanted to know if anyone has taken these courses or can provide some insight from a trucker's perspective. Has anyone made a successful transition from trucking into technology? I'd love to hear some feedback.

thanks!

Quite a few of us made the transition... technology into trucking.

I'd be speaking to potential employers before sinking money into training. Job requirements can be very nuanced these days.

I would have to agree with you.
Out of a trucking integration class of about 20, only 3 of us were not IT guys.

Isn't IT basically a fading profession? It was hot way back before 8 year old kids from Brazil could start doing it. Like back when Myspace and Napster came out.

If you're looking to be home, find a local company. Pop, beer distributor. Garbage, LTL etc. Dirt haulers, concrete, construction company.

Manufacturing can be totally mind numbing and a killer to someone used to open space and freedom of the road. And cubbieville will suck the soul out of you.

Age discrimination is very much real starting as you approach and reach age 40. But no one will admit it.

I have a friend in his 50s in the IT field. He gets a job at XYZ corporation. Is there for about a year, fixed all their bugs that the 20yo college newbies couldn’t solve them fire him due to over qualification. He took a break from that noise and became a traveling atm repairman. About three years later he’s with a new corporation building their tech infrastructure and I can hear the clock ticking on his job already. I say avoid IT and find something more in depth.

Yeah... senior guys command a pretty hefty salary. You either have to be willing to work for less, or they slide you out and hire guys that are still wet behind their ears.

We have a computer geek company that.maintains the server... mostly because the software is complex. The relational databases can be a real pain if they get hosed.

We have 3 folks who work dealing with paperwork, ratecon, contract packages, etc. Two if them (gals) were installing memory in their laptops last week - IT is largely do-it-yerself these days.

Yeah you have to be more of a programmer to make anything and they still often make less than a decent truck driver.

Only real exceptions are the YouTubes and Google's (same thing) and such.

IOW outside Silicon Valley & Seattle the salaries are kind of depressing.

How about 8 figures ala Mark Zuckerburg, a programmer.

Reportedly he's worth about 6 million per day.

What's that about $400 cpm. Lol
Zuckerberg is a life sucking 1-percenter. He may have studied computer science a long time ago, but that is ancient history, as is the last time he wrote a line of code.
