Squeak squeak squeak squeak...

Ok so I have a squeak coming from a pulley somewhere.

We all know that’s only gonna go one way, and that’s south.

So two questions. I’ve never done the water pump, and that sort of feels like the problem. I can’t hear noise or hear a problem with other parts.

A water pump could leave me stranded, I’m not sure that’s a roadside repair I can tackle.

Now, A/C pulleys are in the same vicinity as the squeak. I can spin them by hand and don’t hear or feel a noise.

Both idler and tensioner are +/- 2 years old, and the belt.

I’m okay having the new parts ride as spares, but I don’t know if I should push the service life on the old parts.

So, replace the water pump because that’s a part that can leave me stranded, but let the A/C parts ride because that’s an easy fix and not a huge deal to replace?

I don’t know 🤷🏻‍♀️

If the water pump ain’t leaking I wouldn’t say that it’s the source. Is it constant bird chirp or is it squeal with throttle?

Idler pulley......
I have had them fail at 6 months.....
Yes but with the belt off I can’t feel it or hear it

I’m seriously considering changing them just so I know they’re “new” but anymore new parts don’t necessarily mean that’s better than what you pulled off

Definitely a belt tensioner or idle pulley, or the pulley on your ac compressor
Agreed, but I can’t “feel” it by hand. I had both belts off last Sunday and was spinning everything by hand.

What I should do, is remove the A/C belt completely, pop the engine belt back on then fire it up. If the squeak is gone then I know it’s on the A/C side, if it’s still there I know it’s on the engine side.

I just don’t have time for that today :(

I understand, when you watch the engine running do any of your tensioners hop up and down. Like the spring is getting weak? That’s usually a good indicator.

The A/C runs nice and smooth. The main engine tensioner sometimes hops, but it’s done that all it’s life.

Engine belt tensioner was replaced summer 2017, then summer 2018, then fall 2018....

So maybe it’s due again

What kind of temperature range should he be looking for if he zaps the suspect idler bearing with a laser temp gun, engine running and warmed up?

I dunno I have never scanned one with a temp gun? That’s weird. I would say any significant say 30 degrees or more from the temp of the metal around it would be cause for concern. If you see it hopping up and down though. She needs replaced.

I had one go out on a C15 about 5 years ago. It squeaked exactly as Outlaw is describing.

The mentally unstable owner of the truck specifically told the shop NOT to fix it for some inexplicable reason, so about 2 weeks or 4500-5000 miles later it seized and threw the belt. Then he needed to buy a new belt too. 🙄

I threw a temp gun on all the pullies. All were around 106-110 degrees.

Mechanics stethoscope, they all sounded good. At least, I couldn’t hear the squeak in the ‘scope.

I don’t know. One of these days it’ll get bad enough I guess and I’ll be able to find it

If it’s a constant bird chirp it’s gotta be an accessory. If it was more of a squeal I’d tell you to start checking exhaust manifold don’t take a big leak there to sound like a belt squeal every time your on the throttle.
