When I started doing OTR in 89 the retired guy that started me out told me to basically split the revenue 3 ways, like if you had a driver.
1/3 for the truck. M&R, replacement, etc.
1/3 for the company (owner).
1/3 for the driver. He said to just base your loads on getting 1/3 of the revenue in pocket as if it were wages.
He said to just go on the 'wages' if you couldn't wrap your mind around a certain route and if you decided you'd be making good wages you'll be alright.
I never did it just like that but I've plugged that approach in to my operation at various times...
just because you can't really get away from the early lessons,
and that woulda probably been a good way to go for several years.
