Hey everyone! thanks for opening my thread..I have a small favor or maybe I should call it a question..I am opening a trucking company and I am getting my own truck soon, and I want to put a driver on it..I was wondering what do I need like special documents for that driver to sign? I mean where can I get a drivers application..for him to write down his name etc..references all the fun stuff we all need from drivers..incase of DOT checks..

this would help alot if someone helps me out with this..or gets me an application..thanks everyone!

sorry if in wrong forum..:)

have a nice day..

Best thing to do would be call JJ keller they will have everything you need. But be prepared you are going to need quite a bit. In my opinion NOW IS NOT THE TIME to become an O/Op. Hope you got alot of money to back yourself up. This is only my opinion

thanks for the reply.

EDIT: by the way is it possible to create YOUR OWN application? using ms word or openoffice??

You would be able to get everything you need through JJ Keller

I think it would be cheaper to get the info from Keller then maybe copy it might be better. You can get a whole application file complete for like maybe $10.00 (haven't checked on price recently)

driver applications

to start a business- go to the ooida website it has a great resource for helping you.any truckshow has classes in starting a trucking company. first you protect yourself in creating a llc or ic contract..since it is a huge tax difference, and irs is on your butt, do it right..obtain your tax id number from irs website, get your credit history up with flying j, i strongly recommend their bank, not only are they in real time so u know when your drivers fuel etc but you can split the payroll card, fuel and repairs and fund accordingly..paperwork requires 38 files..vet your drivers through dac and driverfacts..know the law-you are the one going to jail if you dont dot the i and cross the t. get a great accountant. plan to pay for your 2290 paperwork and all fees and taxes and permits..get a great fax machine, for you.open a tripak account, each day you offer credit while waiting on paperwork is huge profit loss, learn the buzz words for accounts payable, receivables, factoring, read dave ramsey-"the total money makeover'", any yes you can print your own application, but your usis forms and driverfacts can be downloaded off the website..I also recommend a 2003 truck with 239 wheelbase so it can do canada, us, mexico. I prefer Freightliner because you have acccess to parts at all trkstops and ship time is minimal, and reduces downtime. kevin rutherford has a website at ATBS business services, that helps you plan ahead..average quarterly taxes are due every 3 months or you pay a penalty..check with IRS to see if drivers are delinquent on payments because they will seize your assets or settlements if it isnt structured properly..I agree with the others JJKELLER is great. And since you only have 6 months before your first audit, you dont want to be found lacking.good luck.I have seen my fuel go from 3000 bucks a month to over 8000 in 2 years. now add in all my tolls....ooowwie it hurts!

thats alot of useful information there..thanks alot:) just finished reading through it..hehe alright i guess ill buy the application from JJ Keller..and then just make copies of it if needed..

also..one more question where can I get more information on how to file IFTA/HUT? i really want to learn how to do those..fill them out..calculate the miles/gallons etc..can anyone help me with that?

ifta hut

hut is done electronically when you cross into ny..you can call ahead..you dont need it..as for new mexico, it is electronically done..and for ifta it is now called by a different name- but you can pay for it in person at any irs office, or you can pay it electronically..if you are using the lease company plates or dot number, all of it will be done..if you are filing for your own authority-OOIDA is the answer..your fuel taxes need to be calculated daily, and paid.If you lease to a company they will have that set up also..if you do it yourself, track how many miles you traveled in a state and learn fuel conservation and state gallon minimums..go to website called diesel watch. I personally like the software called "truckers helper"..make a list of each load, weight, date picked up and dropped off, miles traveled in each state, fuel used, fuel purchased, location amount, location city, location state, and average miles per gallon..include a separate file for all maintainence, because you need all of this information to calculate taxes, fees, permits or fines..be sure you go to Prepass.com and get your apparatus mailed to you before the truck leaves the yard. best 10 bucks a month you will ever spend. Dont forget to document all the trailers, as your insurance will have a field day..if a claim gets filed against you for something you didnt do. As for payroll, be sure you always doublecheck the deductions, IRS doesn't care you didn't pay your driver, but when you file your workers comp insurance on that driver they have to have proof. Most states require owner of trk to carry wc on all driver or ic. probably more than you wanted to know..ha all of this changes because if you incorporate in delaware or nevada, you get huge breaks and it makes a difference where you pay the little ifta state sticker to. that uniform sticker still breaks down by state.

oh i see now..well i know i have to pay for everything..taxes miles all that but i was wondering what software i can use to calculate everything..for example like i have a driver coming from lancaster, ny going out to charlotte, nc.. when i go to mapquest.com it gives me way higher miles then the driver tells me he traveled..or i know others use a special milage calculations program to calculate exact miles from address to address..is there a program like that out there that i can buy/try? would help alot..and i think you need one of those programs to calculate miles for ifta and hut..know any program like that? cause i dont want to calculate by hand lol or by a calculator..

anyways i just calculated miles from lancaster, ny to newburgh, ny passing through elmira,ny and binghamton, ny it becomes 333, exactly how the driver told me..but the company pays for 310 miles..im talking here about some other company that has a driver..and he said theres like actual miles practical miles and something else..and they pay in between..can anyone help me with that? what software or what do they use to get those miles? you can try calculating from lancaster, ny to newburgh, ny on mapquest.com it gives you 353 but the road passes through i-90e and i-81s then 17 then 84 etc..but the driver went through i-390s i86 17 then 84..know what i mean? anyway of getting such software to calculate the right milage..

some of the programs that have what you are looking for would be PC miler and truckers helper, but from the questions you are asking it sounds like you are biting off way more than you can chew, join OOIDA, and talk with them, they have a lot of the answers, just be aware that right now if you don't do it right the first time ,every time this business will eat you alive!!!!!!

yeahh..is OOIDA a free service? I mean if i ask questions they don't charge anything right?

anyone know where i can get a lease agreement for a owner operator to work for my co.?

It sounds to me that you are just learning the trucking industry. Let me tell you this. I have been in this industry for almost 30years and now is NOT the time to be getting a business started. Read the posts in here and you will see all the O/Ops failing and losing everything they own. How you can even think of starting a business now is beyond me. But good luck to you. I hope you have a lot of money backing you, so you will be able to ride out the storm. it is only gonna get worse from here on out. Again GOOD LUCK.

By the way i did an interview with a newspaper, i will send you the link. just read it it has a partial list of expenses and other info that will be useful to you. Please read and do some figuring first. i would hate for you to lose all your money you are going to have to invest in a failing industry.

thanks..yeah i know it wont be easy..but i know couple guys that have started companies like now days are doing just fine, so hopefully i'll be able to handle everything..what will happen to trucks if the fuel goes to 5 bucks or 6 bucks? we all know if trucks stop, america def. will stop too.:\ us government should definitely look into that before everything collapses..although its collapsing already little by little..huge companies are going into bankruptcy..everything is going down..even canadas money is higher then ours..soon the dollar will hardly exist:(.. its sad to see whats going on now..i cant even imagine to myself whats happening with usa now:(.. so much going on..
