OLYMPIA, Wash. — The state Senate on Wednesday passed a nearly $9 billion transportation budget for the next two years that combines various elements of the original House and Senate proposals into a single plan.
Lawmakers voted 39-9 for a budget that includes $5.9 billion in capital investments and brings the two chambers in line on their approach to Washington's ferry system — the largest in the country, with more than 22 million riders each year.
The original House and Senate budget plans were already quite similar but differed in their proposals for ferry rate increases. The House had suggested a one-time fare increase of 5 percent on top of a scheduled annual 2.5 percent hike.
