The board of directors of Trucker Buddy International is posthumously honoring former board member Darrell Hicks. Every year TBI has named an Ambassador of the Year. From now on the award will be known as the Darrell Hicks Memorial Ambassador of the Year trophy.
The first trucker to be awarded the Darrell Hicks Memorial Ambassador of the Year trophy is OOIDA Senior Member Tom Grogan from Superior, WI. Grogan is a Dart Transit Co. contractor. Grogan was named the 2012 Ambassador of the Year earlier this year.
Hicks, an OOIDA life member known to many in the industry simply as “Uncle Darrell,” passed away at his home in Tulare, CA, on July 10. He spent almost 50 years involved in the trucking industry. He suffered from pulmonary fibrosis, a progressively debilitating lung disease.
He was devoted to OOIDA, the Technology & Maintenance Council, the National Association of Show Trucks, and other organizations too numerous to list. Among his favorite projects was Trucker Buddy International, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to helping educate and mentor schoolchildren via a pen pal program. TBI was founded in 1992.
The Trucker Buddy board, in choosing Hicks for the recognition, noted that in 1996, he founded the Truck Day at the Arkansas School for the Blind, in memory of a blind friend. He wanted the students to “see” truck tractors and refrigerated trailers for a day.
