Truck-only lanes on I-70 to be studied in 4 states

Indiana is joining three other states to study the possibility of adding truck-only lanes on I-70 from Kansas City, Mo., to the Ohio-West Virginia border.

The study is one of six funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation to find ways to reduce congestion and improve freight delivery across the nation.

A $3 million grant will pay for Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio to examine the feasibility and cost of adding two truck lanes in each direction on the 750-mile stretch.

The study likely will begin within a year, said Andrew Dietrick, spokesman for the Indiana Department of Transportation. Among other things, it will explore how to fund such an endeavor. One option could be tolls for trucks using the dedicated lanes.

The lanes would be built specifically for big trucks, which means they could be designed to carry heavier loads than now allowed, which could provide the trucking industry with greater efficiency in moving goods, Dietrick said.

Want to improve it? Cut out the 55mph speed limit in Illinois and Ohio.

I know you didn't write it Bullwinkle, but it has got me aggravated.

Well, in another news post, the Governor once again vetoed the split speed limit change in Illinois, and there wasn't enough support to override it.

Just another reason truck drivers need to get more vocal with their representatives, and within their community.

I agree, but it is hard to be vocal with your reps when most of the time you are not even in your area, but elsewhere dropping off a load.

I think more drivers should start e-mail writing campains to their reps. It is hard to get home and calling can cost money. Just start writing e-mails, maybe it would help when they get hundreds. The hard part is getting all drivers to do that.

I think it's a good idea. Speed limit aside, you get some real ignorami on I-70 playing lane tag and enjoying the scenery. Keeping cars out of the truck only lane is a bit of a job though.
