Truck Driver Overweight / Health Stats

Ok, time for an update. I have lost 2 pounds and my pants are just a tad looser.
The hardest part is getting exercise in a snow or ice storm. I will be starting the "South Beach Diet" this week and I hope for better results.
I know many people have tried a lot of different diets and most didn't work, but I felt I needed some guidelines to follow and this was the cheapest (only) diet book I could find at the local Goodwill Store the other day.
I will give another update next weekend, until then I hope you all remain safe, happy and healthy. Truck It Up!!!

The problem with "fad diets" is people will follow the diet, lose a bunch of weight then go right back to their regular eating and exercising (or not exercising as the case may be) and gain it all back. If you can continue to exercise every day and eat healthy after the diet it shouldn't be a problem. Honestly I don't think diets are necessarily bad things, just that that generally aren't healthy as life long diets.... If you can afford it, I hear weight watchers is a great resource. I have some healthy recipes and stuff but a lot of then wouldn't be conducive to a truckers lifestyle, kitchens are generally required for Most of them. I know lean cuisine makes some freezer meals.

I also bought the "South Beach Diet" cookbook at the same time. (Both cost me $3.00). I have looked at the recipes and can modify most to work in the truck. Some I can fix at home and carry in the fridge and heat in the microwave at meal time.
As I said before, I mainly just wanted some guidelines to follow without burning up all of my time searching the net for info.
Have a great weekend.

That's awesome.

You too.

Two pounds is 7,000 calories. If you did this in one week, you have essentially lost 1,000 calories per day through smaller food intake and/or increased exercise. This is significant.

Remember, the weight didn't get there overnight. It won't be lost overnight.

The formula is simple, burn more calorie than you take in. I haven't read the entire post, so forgive me if it has already been mentioned.

Perhaps I can help with that.

First idea: I carried a small folding stepstool in the truck with me. When the weather was too nasty or I was in too bad a neighborhood to go jogging, I unfolded that and did some simple step aerobics in the truck.

Second idea: seek out the truckstops with exercise rooms. There are a few of them out there. They're nothing fancy, but 30 minutes on an exercise bike or elliptical trainer is better than nothing.

Third idea: carry dumbbells with you, and do a simple strength training workout in the sleeper. A little improvisation is necessary here, but get creative and it can be done.

Fourth idea: if you can park somewhere close by, mall walking is always a viable bad-weather alternative.

There you have it, lessons learned from my own experience. Good luck to you!

Strength training is one of the best ways to lose weight because even after your heart rate returns to normal building muscle burns calories and muscle burns calories even when you're sleeping.
I had grilled duck. Wrapped in bacon. Stuffed with Gorgonzola. With a nice roasted pepper, feta, and prosciutto appetizer.

May seem like a strange breakfast to some of you, but I've never once claimed to be normal.

Strange?! I'm gonna come eat breakfast at your house... I had whole wheat blender pancakes.

All the hype about BMI is over the top . One example Priest Holmes , Running back for the Chief's a while back . According to his BMI he would be considered obese . At the time there wasn't an ounce of fat on him

Besides , I checked my height and weight chart and found out that I am NOT too heavy .... I'm a foot and 6 inches too short .

I'm sick and tired of hearing the incorrectly quoted life expectancy of drivers. The CDC never came up with that. It was a very flawed study done years ago that had no basis is science at all.

For some reason, I can't navigate LandLine's site with my Droid anymore. I read the article yesterday in the hard copy rag OOIDA puts out. Here's a Google link to it.

Is a trucker’s life expectancy really 61?

Maybe @Duck can clean it up so it goes straight to the article.

You want to work for a healthier lifestyle? That's great. Keep posting about your progress. There are many here who will be interested and you might help motivate some who have had the idea rattling around in their heads, but haven't quite gotten started. Me? I'll sit on the sidelines for now and cheer you on. Good luck!

I'm not smoking anymore because it makes me feel like ****. My doctor tells me I should exercise more, lose weight, and quit drinking.

Didnt we vote in a health care system that's going to give us everything?
