If they aren't warm to the touch after driving, they're no longer working. Or leaking fluid.
Some do them annually, I just temp mine with IR gun. You'll almost always have one go weak before the others, it's time for the whole axle group's shocks to be replaced when that happens.
I dont know what kinda work you doin but pullin cans I go into some of the baddest yards ya ever seen. I replace my shocks atleast once a year sometimes less than a year if they leaking before the year is up
