Owner Operator Seeking Inputs

Hello Truckers,

I am a technologist exploring an idea about providing continuous telemetry (camera feed, temperature, and other sensors) from inside a cargo truck. Please excuse my lack of experience in this field, as I have never worked with trucks before. I am seeking feedback on whether this is a significant issue. I've heard anecdotally that having a dashboard to display the condition of the cargo inside the truck (e.g., if anything is broken or the temperature is off) via a single dashboard might be helpful.

Is this a real problem that you face? Are there existing solutions for this? The idea is to install a camera with a simple setup and build software to process and display the data.

Please educate me if I'm missing something or if there are other important considerations.

Thank you!

Dry vans don't need it and refers already have indicator lights on the front corner of the trailer.

Don't need another screen to monitor the stuff inside visually. Can't do anything about a load shift on the fly, that's about the most that's gonna happen, and if it's serious you can feel it when it happens.

Carriers already install cameras in their trailers to monitor remotely when they're concerned.

this has been out for a while as well as shippers have a solar panel with a battery with built in gps on the trailers as well!!! there way ahead of you!!!

All of our sea going container tanks had GPS on them. I know, I installed my share of them. They were good for about 3 years with the built in battery. We would then remove it, open the case, replace the battery and send it on it's way.

Imagine 6300 gallons of Jet-A, 100LL Av-Gas, or just regular gasoline floating around in the ocean. One of these island nations would hit the jackpot when they found it.

Stealing a whole container isn't very likely to happen, unless it said Samsung Televisions on the side.

Individual product theft has been an ongoing problem for us, and now we have cable seals installed at the very top of the door latches and have to climb a ladder with a grinder or cable cutters to chop them or they put a warlock on the door handle and we have to grab the tool to remove it. Then we can deliver.

Theives will break into any container and pull out whatever is inside though. They don't target anything in particular unless they have an inside man. I've had cut and missing seals from random loads with no particular value.

Picked up one where they tried and didn't succeed just the other week. They must almost have gotten caught and scurried off like the rats that they are.

Looks to me, like they had a sloppy set of bolt cutters. If that was a solid steel bolt seal, they would have been in. But this has cables inside and the bolt cutters need to be tight or new.

glad you caught it before pick up. And curious: what happens if they steal on your watch? Insurance covers?
