OTR vs. Regional vs. Local: Which Trucking Career Is Right for You?

Choosing between Over-the-Road (OTR), regional, and local trucking jobs is one of the biggest decisions a new driver will face. Each option offers different schedules, home time, and pay structures. OTR drivers cover long distances with fewer home days, while regional drivers stay closer to home, and local drivers are usually home daily. Experienced drivers, which path did you choose, and why? New drivers, what questions do you have about these different career options?

I've never done OTR. I could probably only do it for myself, not as a company driver.

Regional vs local I liked regional as a company driver because it was more relaxed than slip seating local, but when I did it the pay schedule was lower than local and if I committed fully I wouldn't have continued to make the stupid money made doing regional for local pay.

In conclusion it pretty much all sucks.

My opinion is that trucking is only good if you own your truck and your business and can decide load for load or day for day whether you want to run and have the financial backing to say no.
