Home Time — Does Your Company Keep Their Word?

I’m OTR and my company likes to promise “every other weekend.”
Reality? More like every 3rd weekend if the stars align.

I get that freight changes… but don’t tell me I’ll be home for something important and then act surprised when I’m upset about missing it.

How’s your company on home time?
  • Solid and reliable?
  • Hit or miss?
  • Total joke?
Let’s hear the truth — no recruiter BS here.

I was only with 2 companies as a driver and two as a leased O/O but my experience was they NEVER told the truth but then again I wasn't above telling them to GFY.

If they didn't honor their word they shouldn't expect me to honor mine if they told me I would have hometime I took my home time!

I once deadheaded from Albuquerque NM to home in Ohio with them bitching and threating all the way took the three days promised and went back on the boards, not a word was said, but I never had a problem with them again,

back then you could stand up to them I did have a problem with landair dispacher once I made a beeline to the terminal and blocked him from leaving and we had it out right there in the parking lot in the end I spent a night in jail we both lost our jobs when the higher up read the q-comm messages.

Cops refused to prosecute when they read the messages that is when I bought my first truck

start looking for maybe a logistics company like i did, that did dedicated freight...i worked only mon-fri, got home early sat mornings.

all holidays off, we did work ALL holiday eve's, so that when the stores opened at 7AM, they had thier stock

otherwise, we were ALL home for the holidays.

i got paid a salary, which was good, and health benefits.

logistics companies like..

Ryder, Penske, DHL(private contractors for them, go in person to see who they are), Ruan, and there are also LTL like ABF, NewPenn, SAIA, UPS Freight, UPS as well, companies where you can work city, or overnight, but there, you "might" have to do an over-nighter...but you are still homme weekly

good luck

Dedicated predictable freight is how you get predictable home time.

Otherwise you're out scavenging. It's expensive to operate an unloaded truck, so if you're scavenging and end up in Texas, it's gonna be super expensive to get you home to Maine on time.

Companies and dispatchers in particular need to be honest and up front about how this works and stop this "just do me this favor and I'll get you home" nonsense.
