Motor Carrier EC's Going For It

Check engine light came on again yesterday. On a really light pull. Probably a P0420. Seen it before.

Truck runs good otherwise. Not gonna clear it with the scanner because I'm curious if it'll eventually go away on its own due to cold weather winter bullshit.

Not sure if I paid $180,000 for a brand new truck I wouldn't still get codes when it's cold.

Truck is probably running the same as the 1988 Ford would under the same conditions, but the old Ford would be like yeah it's cold, duh, and not actually say anything because there's no computer.

Also also, I put the cold front on today. My revenue lately has been bobtail and fetch empty which doesn't tax the truck very much. It helps a lot keeping the temps up.

But on my way home today with a trailer the temps dropped way down the same as I was complaining about a week or so ago when I bought the thermostat.

Might have to put that in but working on a truck in cold temps sucks.

What kind of movies did you get?
This time? Leon the Professional, The Truman Show, and the two Zombieland installments.

Zombieland is more comedy than horror based on the random clips I've seen online. Never watched either in full.

Already watched Truman for the first time the same day it arrived. Awesome movie, but with obvious plot holes.

I've seen Leon before but it was a long time ago, probably on a rented VHS.

I'm trying not to go too crazy on the spending since I'm trying to stick with 4K Ultra HD to make the most of my TV.

Kind of still having buyer's remorse over the Honda.

Yeah it starts up good. Yeah it doesn't smell like rat piss. Yeah it doesn't have a windshield leak. Yeah it does kinda good in the snow on stock tires. Yeah it warms my sphincter with the press of a button. Yeah it can haul cardboard to the recyclers. Yeah it can fit all my groceries with no problem.

But it's $592 a month for 36 months and still hasn't got me any tail.
Never get a Dodge/Chrysler if you don't like nasty smells.

ATF+4 automatic transmission fluid, OMG it smells like dried up urine on asphalt in July. No, it's worse than that. It's almost as bad as cat piss.

And my damn dog chewed the cap off an (almost) empty quart container of it in my van. 🤬

I liked the T660's that had the sunroof. I never had the sunroof but I thought it was a good option. t660 kenworth with sunroof - Bing
Every Van Wyk truck I ever drove had a skylight that doesn't open. Does that count?

I'm totally over Stellantis after the Jeep. It was fun and VERY capable but the driving position was shitty for short people.

Makes me sad because it was a 6 speed manual and a V6 (Pentastar, but still) and I only got rid of it because I couldn't drive it comfortably on the regular. I'd still have it today if I could. It felt like driving grandpas International Harvester when you're 8 years old.

Everything else screams low FICO so I'm not into that. I have an image to maintain.

Got about 4-5 inches of snow with a slight underlayer of ice, so naturally I decided to clean off the Honda and take it for a spin.

Zero issues getting out of my uncleared yard and "driveway" and no problems on the roads unless I got stupid.

It's too easy to get stupid in these modern coccoons so I'm probably going to get some snow tires after all. Feel like I should have that extra 5% of performance even though technically I can intelligence my way around it.

DEF quality issue again yesterday. Had to do a rest area Regen for an hour. Derated the power to the point it couldn't maintain speed with an empty. Felt like a 50% loss of hp. Threatened a 5mph derate and that's when I found the nearest safe area and took it.

Fortunately my truck didn't catch fire so I could sit in it and stay warm. But still.

It's zero degrees out today. I'm wussing out and staying home. Don't want to sit for another Regen.

I also don't cope well when it's bitter out either. Especially just being sick as hell in December.

If this truck is developing big emissions issues I'm probably going to have to trade it but I'm waiting until spring to see if it's just a cold weather problem. If it turns out to be something I can fix, I can do it when it's warmer.

Having time off lets me think about what might be going on with the DEF if it's not just cold weather.

I've never drained and cleaned the tank like you're supposed to at intervals and it's been a little since I replaced the def filter in the pump.

The pump itself is also original so despite still functioning to pump DEF might have a bad seal letting contaminants in. It's bolted to bottom outside of the tank therefore exposed to the road grime.

This is all brain conjecture. I'd have to actually crawl around on the cold concrete to look at the pump and/or change the filter so that's not happening yet.

How long has this been happening? I mean like is it just one tank full of DEF or Multiple tank fillings?
A good cleaning couldn't hurt and see if that helps before looking at sensors.

I don't remember exactly when the last time was but it was recent enough not to totally ignore it. Couple tanks ago. Not several times this same tank.

Yup, that's a problem that can't be ignored.
For sure. This was the first time it derated, at least to such a noticable extent. It eventually threatened to derate me to 5mph if I didn't pull it over. Fortunately all it did initially was cut horsepower not speed.

I have to give it credit though, it gave more warnings than the Schneider Cascadias did. I got "bad def" once in that thing and it was at 5mph as soon as I pulled away from the pump. Zero warning whatsoever.

This last time I was able to deliver my load then head up the highway a little ways. Original plan was to run it to the pickup customer another 50 miles then Regen there as a bobtail but once it threatened the 5mph I found the nearest safe spot. I didn't want to risk being stuck on the shoulder for an hour.

I went to do a forced laptop Regen on the truck this morning preemptively for today, and my subscription expired back in late November. My previous in the wild Regen was before I had used the software last so apparently it was longer ago than I was thinking.

Naturally I renewed the program today, but it's a manual process for them to approve and make it work again. They're a little behind the times on that.

So I'll have to run and hope it doesn't trigger again today and if it does, pull over and put up with it.

I don't think it'll need one so soon. Especially since it's supposed to be warmer today.

I didn't see it get up to 41 but for a minute, when I was rolling down the highway.

Mostly hovered 30-33. Basically still freezing ass air and steel but warmish blacktop melting snow and ice.

Been a while since I got started early enough to finish with daylight. Put fresh wipers on the truck since I could still see.

Ice and snow pretty much tears up these cheap Ancos. I got 'em dirt cheap in bulk on RockAuto. Like 2-3 bucks a piece. So I don't mind tossing them even when they only show early signs of wear.

Also replaced the Hondas, but only got one of each size so didn't get any bargains. They didn't have closeouts.

As we were leaving work tonight a co-worker noticed a wiper blade just below the wipers where the air intake is. It was just sitting there. I took a look at it and it looked like the brand I had replaced and it was the same size as the right wiper. I must have forgot it there when I was changing the wiper blades.
The thing is, I changed that right wiper about six or eight months ago and it has been there the whole time
