Sen. Barbara Boxer is asking the federal government today to reevaluate standards for truckers who drive hazardous materials to prevent accidents like the tanker explosion to crippled one of California's busiest interchanges.
Boxer sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security Director Michael Chertoff. She wants the Transportation Security Administration to reevaluate the standards for truckers who drive hazardous materials, like compressed gases and jet fuel.
Transportation Secretary Mary Peters was on hand as well near the interchange for a tour of the damage. She has committed the immediate release of $2 million in emergency funding to help with repairs. And she's pledging more financial support.
