ALEXANDRIA, Va. (June 12, 2007) – Montana trucking executive Ray Kuntz has assumed the chairmanship of the American Trucking Associations.

Kuntz was scheduled to serve this year as first vice chairman under the chairmanship of Mac McCormick. But days before McCormick was scheduled to take office at the ATA's meeting, held late last year at Grapevine, Texas, he was tragically killed in a plane crash. The organization's board of directors asked outgoing chairman Pat Quinn to remain in office until this month, at which time Kuntz would assume the chair position. Kuntz took over as chair at the conclusion of an ATA Executive Committee meeting held in Dallas this week.

Kuntz, chief executive officer of Watkins & Shepard Trucking Inc., Helena, Mont., today thus begins a 16-month term.

During his term as chairman, Kuntz said he aims to build consensus within the trucking industry on highway funding, environmental and tax policy issues. Kuntz also is supportive of tort reform and attracting new drivers to the industry.

Kuntz played a lead role in developing the associations’ comprehensive truck driver recruitment campaign, which includes GetTrucking.com. ATA modeled its Company Driver Tuition Finance Program after a financing program successfully piloted by Kuntz at Watkins & Shepard as a means of addressing the company’s shortage of long-haul truck drivers.
