I failed my DOT Pysical with Swift

what do I do know !!! I failed to read line 5 with my left eye !! swift said I needed to apply for a federal waiver know and it could take up to 9 months to here anything back!! I have 3 kids I cant afford to wait to make money trucking that long can anyone guide me through a quick fix for this situation , maybe go to another doctor and get another DOT Physical done ???

I'd find out if that was a SWIFT requirement? or an actual FMCSA requirement you failed.
eCFR — Code of Federal Regulations
(10) Has distant visual acuity of at least 20/40 (Snellen) in each eye without corrective lenses or visual acuity separately corrected to 20/40 (Snellen) or better with corrective lenses, distant binocular acuity of at least 20/40 (Snellen) in both eyes with or without corrective lenses, field of vision of at least 70° in the horizontal Meridian in each eye, and the ability to recognize the colors of traffic signals and devices showing standard red, green, and amber;

If you failed for a company policy, I'd go find a private doctor immediately.

My last DOT physical cost $103 out of pocket.

Was it a Swift hired doctor who did your exam? I think a lot of large companies make you go to their doctor even if you have a valid medical already. I know one doctor who will turn his back when doing the eye test so instead of covering an eye you can keep both open!!!

he would not be the first person I am aware of who would have failed for a company policy and not a FMCSA regulation.

If that's the case, it's entirely different for him to go find his own physician to do a physical.

it was a DOT Requirement said I must have 20/40 in both eyes !!! my own doctor passed me on vision before I went to C1 trucking school so that DOT physical was good !!! swift gave me another one 3 days ago and failed me on my vision and from what I here swift sends failed DOT physicals strait to DOT !!! what should I do !!!!

is it true they send failed DOT physicals strait to DOT ?? because if not I still have my DOT Medical card from my first doctor who passed me for my DOT trucking school physical

If it's just vision go see an optometrist and get glasses...

Call em back explain you now have glasses...

You could probably just take the Eye Exam over but when operating you had better be wearing those glasses because the card will be marked by doctor noting corrective vision..

A lot of people end up getting glasses not the end of the world

I been wearing my glasses since I was 5 years old I have a lazy eye they already knew this my right eye is 20/20 but my left eye is up and down lol 20/60 normally I cheat with my right eye or try to remember the letters I just read but bottom line if I go to another DOT doctor and get passed by them I should be good to go again right ?? start trucking again with another company like TMC who hires students

I would suggest buying a pair of reading glasses from Wal-Mart print a copy of the eye exam from online and start studying. It worked for me.Come when I took the eyetesr I didn't need the glasses I passed. But if you s take the eye test with your glasses you will be required to wear them at all times while driving.

having Swift reject you, may be a blessing.

go to an eye doctor, that has better equipment that an ordinary eye chart your primary doctors office will have.

i have been going to the same eye care office for about 40 years now. i never trust that insipid eye chart. the eye doctor takes computer measurements, which cannot be disputed.

what i do here is go for an exam, and he gives me a "blue card", and i take that to the DOT doctor.

it is ALWAYS ACCEPTED at any DOT physical, as well as anytime i go to renew my CDL at the DMV....

I'm not sure I'm on board with the "memorize the eye chart so you can cheat" advice.

Am I the only person here who thinks maybe vision is kind'a important for a truck driver to have?

Yes. For two reasons: The guy has a reason go to an eye doctor and re-up his prescription and he can wait until he gets it straightened out before getting in a truck. I'm all for that. Swift will most likely give him a shot once he gets this straightened out.

With the way FMCSA set the medical examiner stuff up, I'm not sure the guy can just go to a different doctor anymore. The whole point of the ME registration and licensing agency medical card thing was to slow down "doctor shopping." The guy admits there is a problem with his vision and he knew about it before applying for a driving job. My vision is 20/20 and 20/25. I find myself squinting to see things sometimes, even during broad daylight. His left eye is 20/60 "up and down" which means it could be 20/25 sometimes, but it could also be as bad as 20/100 sometimes.

In my experience, my left eye does most of the work, since that's the direction that is open to outside input more than the right because that's the window closest to the driver. Most of the stuff that happens comes from the left because that side of the truck is the traffic side.

....and y'all are telling this guy to cheat the eye exam.

SMH

Of course vison is important,im not saying cheating.i'm saying study all the charts and just maybe op won't need prescription glasses after all.It worked for me and I didn't have to spend hundreds of dollars at the eye doctor.

thanks iv never heard of a blue card ???
here in my state (could be the same card in all states, but maybe a different color), it has the same information as the DOT med form.

the eye doctor (or specialist) jots down the numbers from your exam, thanks in part to the computerized equipment they have nowadays.

NO ONE disputes that "blue card" from the eye doctor.

i was once told by my now retired eye doctor, "if anyone at the DMV says this card is no good, or i still have to take the eye test at the DMV, you call me right away"....

never had to call him......

the DMV simply takes the blue card, and enters it into my information at license renewal time. the DOT doctor simply staples that, to my long form, for his file. he then just writes down the information for my personal record, and i get a new DOT med card.

easy-peasy....

BUT...an eye doctor or specialist, may charge more than your primary care doctor.....well worth it, if you have a problem, or are at least borderline with your eyesight, under the DOT rules.

if you are borderline (let's say), the regular hanging wall eye chart will trip you up...the lighting might be dim, you may be a bit too far from the line you're supposed to be standing on, etc.

no way to trip up a computer eye exam.....you either pass, or don't....!!!!!!

plus you get checked for glaucoma, macular degeneration, etc,etc......well worth the fee you pay

I worked with a guy that could only see out of one eye. he drove for years and years an he was a good driver too relatively speaking.
He had a dirty doctor.
until one day they caught on to him. The guy not the Doctor.
