Eastbound I-70 Lewis and Clark Viaduct Closed for Repairs in Kansas City

Sept. 9, 2024

KDOT has closed the eastbound I-70 Lewis and Clark Viaduct in Kansas City, Kansas, for repairs after a recent inspection revealed issues with the bridge’s gusset plates, which connect truss members. To ensure safety, KDOT took immediate action and closed the bridge to all traffic, including pedestrians.

KDOT engineers are preparing plans for the necessary repairs, which will begin in about a month and are expected to last until the end of 2024. In the meantime, a detour has been established, and drivers are encouraged to check the KDOT website for updates and a detour map.

Calvin Reed, KDOT Secretary, acknowledged the challenges this closure will cause for commuters and businesses in the area, noting, “We understand this is an inconvenience, but safety must come first.” The westbound I-70 bridge will remain open during this period to help alleviate some of the traffic impact.

The eastbound I-70 bridge was built in 1907 and modified in 1963. It has been inspected annually, with the last significant work done in 2021. While the westbound bridge was reconstructed in 2021, the eastbound bridge has not yet been scheduled for a similar overhaul.
