A Scenic Route Through New Mexico: Pumpkins, DOT Inspections, and Rest Stops

In today’s journey, we embarked on a trip to deliver a load of pumpkins from the Lusk Onion Company in Dalhart, Texas, to a Walmart Distribution Center in Los Lunas, New Mexico. This trip, filled with scenic landscapes and a few unexpected stops, provided a glimpse into the daily life of a trucker on the road. Here’s a detailed account of our route, key moments, and a breakdown of the Level 3 DOT Inspection that took place along the way.

Route Overview: Dalhart, Texas to Los Lunas, New Mexico

Our day began early, loading pumpkins at 9:00 am in Dalhart. From there, we set off westward, heading towards New Mexico. The journey took us through open plains and rolling hills, with the crisp morning air setting the tone for the long drive ahead.

The New Mexico Weight Station: A Level 3 DOT Inspection

As we crossed into New Mexico, the day took an unexpected turn at the weight station in Nara Visa. We were pulled in for a Level 3 DOT Inspection, a procedure every trucker knows all too well.

What is a Level 3 DOT Inspection? A Level 3 DOT Inspection focuses primarily on the driver rather than the vehicle. During this inspection, the officer checks the following:

  • Driver’s Credentials: The inspector verifies your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), medical certificate, and any endorsements.
  • Hours of Service (HOS): The officer reviews your logbook or electronic logging device (ELD) to ensure compliance with HOS regulations.
  • Driver’s Physical Condition: The inspector assesses if the driver is physically capable of safely operating the vehicle.
  • Seat Belt Usage: A quick check to ensure the driver is wearing their seatbelt.

After a thorough review, we were back on the road, having successfully passed the inspection.

Lunch Break at Flying C Ranch

As the day wore on, we made a much-needed stop at the Flying C Ranch in New Mexico. This popular rest area offered a perfect spot to stretch out and prepare a healthy lunch right from the truck. The break provided a chance to recharge and ensure we stayed energized for the rest of the journey.

Wrapping Up the Day in Albuquerque

Our journey concluded at the Pilot Travel Center on the south side of Albuquerque at 1:45 pm. With our delivery scheduled for the next morning at 6:00 am, it was the perfect place to go off duty and get some rest. This stop provided all the amenities needed to relax and recharge after a long day on the road.

Conclusion: Another Day, Another Journey

Today’s trip was a reminder of the varied experiences truckers face every day. From navigating through inspections to finding the right places to stop and rest, it’s all part of the job. As we gear up for tomorrow’s delivery, it’s clear that every mile brings its own story, challenges, and rewards.
